The devastating 2017 North Bay fires made national headlines as they razed homes, charred tens of thousands of acres of land, and left thousands of survivors out of work. In Sonoma and Napa counties, there is historic demand for construction labor to rebuild homes and businesses. At the same time, many hospitality and agriculture workers whose jobs were displaced by the fires are finding their skills don’t match current needs.

How can philanthropy support the immediate and long-term needs of vulnerable Sonoma and Napa workers—including many undocumented immigrants—who are faced with dire unemployment challenges, while meeting the hiring needs of local employers? This gathering at the Napa Valley Community Foundation, co-hosted by Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees and the Bay Area Workforce Funders Collaborative, will bring together local workforce and community leaders and funders to learn about post-fire workforce initiatives underway in the region. The session will conclude with a funder discussion to discuss how philanthropy can help support coordination to rebuild the local workforce.

Join us to:

  • Learn about the landscape of recovery efforts underway
  • Identify existing challenges and gaps in rebuilding the local workforce
  • Discuss how funders can support workforce development that contributes to the region’s collective prosperity while offering opportunity to vulnerable Sonoma and Napa residents
