Session Description:
Narrative frames such as “national security” in immigration policy or “law and order” in the criminal legal system have disproportionately targeted and harmed communities of color, especially Muslim and Black and brown populations. Black, African, Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (BAMEMSA) communities have been pushing back against this frame, which has dehumanized and criminalized them. This has resulted in the foreclosure of migration pathways that have been afforded to other immigrant populations, disproportionately longer periods in detention, racial profiling contributing to the arrest-to-deportation pipeline, and a number of other rights violations. In this session, you will hear from a panel of experts on their efforts to dismantle the “national security” frame in immigration policy and practice.
