The Houston neighborhoods of Magnolia Park, Idylwood, and Eastwood evolved with the arrival of new residents from Mexico, Europe, Asia, and others in the early 20th century. At the same time, the industrialization of the area also helped promote the growth of a bustling business district. However, the presence of industrial plants, factories, and refineries in the largest Mexican settlement in Houston led to the emergence of human rights and environmental justice organizing groups working to address the resulting adverse effects on the health and well-being of neighborhood residents. Join T.E.J.A.S. for a “toxic tour” of the East End of Houston, where some of the largest refineries and chemical plants surround residential neighborhoods and spew toxins into the air.
