Many U.S. immigration laws are inherently ableist and aim to prevent people with chronic illness and mental disabilities from entering or staying in the country, obtaining work authorization, or accessing public benefits to which they are entitled. The idea that the only immigrants “worthy” of coming to or staying in the U.S. are those who are healthy and wealthy flies in the face of our stated values and negatively impacts immigrants with disabilities.
