The “public charge” rule overhaul introduced by the Trump administration would be the most radical change to our nation’s immigration policy in decades. Immigrant families who use any type of public benefits, from medical care to food assistance to housing support, would be at risk of losing their path to permanent residency. Use of even one benefit could be disqualifying.

Millions of immigrants who would have qualified for green cards under the current system could be denied a future in this country simply for taking a little help when they fall on hard times—like when a mother becomes ill or loses one of her jobs. This risk is already convincing many immigrants to disenroll from programs for which they qualify, and if this rule were enacted, millions more will follow. The resulting stress on local institutions and damage to our communities’ health and well-being will be enormous.
Join this webinar to hear from leaders of the Protecting Immigrant Families campaign, which is leading the effort to get 100,000 original comments against the rule, and from service providers about the impacts, both present and future. Our panel will also cover opportunities for funders to engage and mitigate the impacts of the proposal.
