description
Michigan is among the top five states in the country that welcomes the most refugees annually. The state is home to nearly 700,000 people who are foreign-born, along with 108,000 individuals without documentation, with 70% of those individuals living in Southeast Michigan.
Join GCIR and our colleagues, Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF), for a conversation that will provide funders with a baseline understanding of immigrant and refugee issues and insights into how they can support these communities beyond civic engagement efforts in the run-up to elections and readily and strategically allocate resources in response to post-election developments. Attendees will gain insights into how nonprofit partners serving immigrant communities are preparing for potential risks of stricter federal enforcement policies and the opportunities for advocating for more inclusive and just policies at state and local levels.
Whether your organization funds education, the environment, health or beyond, immigrants and refugees are a core part of the community you support. If you are interested in learning about how your organization can be more intentional about engaging with nonprofits working alongside these communities, the next session in CMF's Equity Signature Series is an opportunity to deepen your knowledge and grow your network of peers and partners in this space.
This session represents one of several spaces GCIR and our allies will be holding for philanthropy ahead of the upcoming elections, with additional opportunities including our 2024 national convening in Detroit (October 28-30).
