Karen Musalo, director of the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies and the Human Rights Clinic at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, makes a case for why the United States should grant refugee status to immigrant women who suffer human rights violations, such as female genital cutting and forced marriage. She also demonstrates how improved U.S. foreign policy could prevent the flight of women by forcing other countries to stiffen their own laws and improve criminal prosecutions as conditions for receiving U.S. aid.
