Presented jointly by Funders’ Committee for Civic Participation (FCCP) and Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR).
Explore the growing cross-sector movement to promote immigrant civic participation and community-building efforts in San Antonio and Texas and learn strategies that you can apply to your grantmaking in other parts of the country.
This learning tour will provide a platform for peer learning with funding colleagues and an exchange with local and statewide organizations focused on how the state's diverse immigrant population participates in democratic practice, solves community problems, and develops their leaders. You’ll hear about the Texas Civic Engagement Table's efforts to facilitate collaboration among diverse local and statewide groups in order to advance immigrant integration and civic participation; and you’ll explore the strengths, challenges, and community impact of emerging models for immigrant civic participation in this region.
Our destination is the Southwest Workers’ Union community space located in the heart of San Antonio’s historically African American neighborhood. We will begin with a short city tour of community murals in West Central San Antonio that touch on the role of storytelling in community engagement, followed by an overview of the impacts that colonialism, slavery, and immigration have had on civic engagement in Texas as we drive past the Alamo.
Lunch and transportation will be provided. This learning tour will depart from the Hilton Palacio del Rio Hotel. A complete itinerary will be sent to registrants prior to the event.
This event is open to FCCP 2013 Spring Convening registrants. Space is limited and guaranteed on a first-come/first-serve basis. The cost is $50 and pre-payment via pre-registration is required.
